Since many of the readers of this page aren't from my area, I have to preface the face that Greenwood is the Harley-driving, redneck part of Indianapolis, and the home to the only Buddhist Center in town. You also have to know a little about Buddha's teachings to get why this is funny. With that in mind...
This last Monday (9/11) I was invited to sing at the 'Interfaith Prayers for Peace' gathering at IUPUI. It went fairly well, considering it was acapella, solo, and a song I only kind of remembered. Anyway, afterward I was invited to lunch with the speakers who were the focus of the event.
So I'm sitting down to lunch with a Rabbi, a Tibetan Buddhist Monk, a Quaker Minister, an Episcopalian Priest, and an American Indian. First, the Rabbi makes fun of Butler students for being basically a bunch of religiously narrow-minded 'middle class white kids,' which I found amusing by itself. But then he turns to the Monk and says "So, how did you end up in Indianapolis?"
The monk replies, "I just love suffering!"
Even the Quaker broke her silence and laughed.
